Some of us experience the endless tossing and turning in our beds, with too many thoughts on our mind preventing sleep more often than others. There are a lot of options out there to help you get a good dose of sleep. There are relaxation techniques, foods, medication – but what about tea? It turns out there are several teas that promote sleep.

Herbal Tea

When you are searching for a tea that promotes sleep aid, the first thing you have to do is find a herbal tea. Herbal teas are natural and come from flowers and roots – these teas do not contain caffeine. Non-herbal teas such are green tea, contain caffeine. This is the one ingredient you want to avoid if you are searching for a tea that will improve your ability to get some shut eye. Caffeine wakes you up, gives you a boost of energy and keeps you awake – always drink herbal teas for insomnia and avoid non-herbal ones.


Chamomile comes from the daisy-like family of flowers and most people have heard of it. This is by far the most popular tea on the market for sleeplessness. Chamomile is meant to reduce insomnia and it is said to reduce nightmares as well – so not only will you sleep, but you’ll have a better sleep. The reason for this is because it has relaxing properties that make us feel at ease and worry free. It is suggested that you drink this tea 30-45 minutes before bedtime for it to help you fall asleep. The tea can be made with fresh or dried flower leaves – it depends on your preference or the availability.

Valerian Root

Valerian tea is said to help relentlessness as well as decrease anxiety. This tea has sedative like effects which calm you down encouraging sleep. When we are less anxious, we can relax, which allows for dosing off. The tea is made from valerian roots and these roots are actually used as an ingredient in many sleep aid medications. This tea promotes drowsiness, but the tea does not take effect right away. Depending on the person the tea can take anywhere from one week to one month to get in your system. So you should take it regularly to experience its tiredness producing effects. It is suggested to take it 1-2 hours before bedtime. Do not take it much more than 2 hours prior to sleeping because it does make you drowsy and this could be dangerous.


Lavender scent is often used in aromatherapy because it is meant to relax us, removing all tension from our body. It turns out that boiling water and letting lavender leaves steep in it, makes for a great sleep aid. For the best effects it is said to drink this tea once it has cooled. Lavender helps promote sleep because it relaxes us. It makes us feel like all of our tension is being washed away. It puts us in a calm state which helps us fall asleep.
